Circular Composites by Design: Testing a Design Method in Industry

The design of composite products for a circular economy is challenging. Materials such as glass-fibre-reinforced plastics have long product lifetimes but are hard to recycle. For the effective reuse and recycling products, parts, materials, recovery strategies must be selected implemented in stage. This extends scope complexity process requires additional skills from designers. We developed novel composites method containing materials support designers improve circularity. method, which first its kind address helps explore pathways generate solutions. In this study, we evaluated method’s effectiveness, accessibility, usability practice. tested with five case studies construction, furniture, automotive industries. was used generate, evaluate, communicate, detail designs. found that two cases develop concepts. other three cases, rather than product-level result, focus on improving material formulations instead overall design. Although considered accessible usable, effectiveness restricted by existing business, logistics, reprocessing technology, policy contexts. These factors intertwined partly dictate boundary conditions design, means successfully implement proposed transition holistic approach adjust process, organisations, value chains.
